How Long Does It Take to Get PMP Certified? The Fixed and Variable Parts
Most of the PMP timeline is set by you, but three parts are not, and they are the parts people miss. PMI gives 90 days to answer an audit, one year from approval to pass the exam, and a one-year wait after three failed attempts. Everything else — the training, the studying — runs at whatever pace you choose.
This timeline uses only durations PMI publishes, read from its certification page, the PMP Examination Content Outline — July 2026 and the PMI Certification Handbook (revised June 2026) on 24 September 2026.
Stage one: the years you already have
Before any clock starts, you need the experience. Between 24 and 60 months of leading projects depending on your education, all of it inside the ten years before you apply, with overlapping months counted once.
This is the longest stage by a wide margin and the one no course can shorten. If you are three months short, the honest answer is to apply in three months. PMI audits applications at random and asks supervisors to sign for the experience you claimed, so an optimistic entry is a bad trade against a one-year suspension.
Stage two: the 35 training hours
Then 35 hours of project-management training, which can be spread over any period you like — PMI asks you to record training hours regardless of when they were earned, so there is no expiry to race.
How long that takes in practice depends entirely on the format you buy:
- A live cohort typically runs over a few days or several weekends. PMI Authorized Training Partners we looked at on 24 September 2026 advertised 35 to 36 contact hours.
- PMI’s own self-paced course is 35 hours of material, which is a fortnight of evenings at a serious pace or a couple of months at a gentle one.
- A multi-course self-paced series such as Coursera’s Google Project Management Certificate suggests six months at ten hours a week on its own page.
- Training you already hold takes no time at all. Employer programmes and university modules count, and an active CAPM waives the requirement outright.
Which of those PMI will actually accept — and the live-class rule that changes on 1 December 2026 — is set out in what counts as PMP certification training.
Stage three: the application, and the audit branch
The application itself is an evening’s work if your records are in order and a fortnight of chasing if they are not. You list every project separately, in months.
Then the branch. If your application is not selected for audit, approval is quick and you move on. If it is, PMI notifies you by email before you pay the certification fee, and:
- You have 90 days to submit the requested documentation.
- Once submitted, PMI says the audit takes about five to seven business days.
- Your one-year eligibility period starts on the day you are told you passed the audit, not the day you applied.
Plan for the audit branch rather than hoping past it. The documents it asks for — diplomas, supervisor signatures, training certificates — are the slowest things in the whole process to obtain, because they depend on other people.
Stage four: the one-year eligibility period
Once your application is approved and the fee is paid, you have one year to pass the exam, and you may sit it up to three times inside that year. Fees are repayable for the second and third attempts.
Two failure modes have hard consequences:
- Three failures inside the year: you wait one year from the date of the last exam before reapplying for the PMP. You may apply for a different PMI certification in the meantime.
- The year expiring without a pass, even with attempts left: you reapply from the start. There is no waiting period in this case, but there is no refund either — PMI says an expired eligibility period forfeits the entire fee.
There is also a smaller clock worth writing down. Reschedule or cancel within 30 days of your appointment and PMI charges US$70 plus taxes; inside 48 hours you cannot reschedule at all, and a no-show forfeits the whole exam fee.
Exam day, to the minute
The exam is 240 minutes — four hours — for 180 questions, of which 170 are scored and 10 are unscored pretest items. There are two ten-minute breaks: the first after the case-study section, the second about midway through the independent questions. Once you start a break you cannot return to the previous section.
Add 30 minutes for check-in at a test centre, where PMI says to arrive half an hour before the appointment, plus an optional tutorial and survey that do not count against exam time. Online proctored exams need a system test and an extensive check-in of their own.
Results, and the one slow path
Computer-based candidates get a preliminary result at the test centre and can access the full exam report online no later than 10 business days after the exam date. Paper-based testing sessions are much slower: PMI says those score reports arrive within six to eight weeks by email.
Putting a range on it
- Fastest realistic path, no audit, hours already held: application to certificate in a few weeks, limited mostly by exam appointment availability.
- Typical path: a month or two collecting and studying the 35 hours, a week or two on the application, a study run of several weeks, then the exam inside the one-year window.
- Slow path: add up to 90 days if you are audited and have to chase documents, and up to a full extra year if you exhaust three attempts.
The single biggest determinant is not study speed. It is whether your experience and training records exist in a form somebody else can verify. That is worth checking against the current PMP certification requirements before you start any clock.
