The honest answer to “how much does PMP certification cost” starts with a gap. PMI does not publish the PMP exam fee anywhere a member of the public can read it. Its certification handbook says fees are “subject to all applicable fees” and vary by membership status and regional location; the PMP handbook says the same about the PMP specifically and adds that membership is not required to sit it. The certification page tells you the fee arrives after your application is accepted.
Every page that gives you a crisp two-part figure for members and non-members is reproducing a number from somewhere other than PMI’s current site. It may well be right. It is not sourced, and this site does not print unsourced money.
The prices PMI does publish
Four, all read from PMI’s own store and certification pages on 24 September 2026.
- PMI individual membership — USD $139 a year. Auto-renews, cancellable, and the price includes a chapter.
- PMP Exam Prep Course — USD $699 for members, USD $799 otherwise. PMI’s own 35-hour course, carrying 35 PDUs.
- PMP PMI Study Hall Essentials — USD $59. Three months of access to practice questions and full-length simulations, renewing quarterly thereafter.
- Free Introduction: PMP — USD $0. About an hour, and the sensible first purchase precisely because it is not one.
That is the entire public price list for the PMP. Notice what is missing from it: the thing you are actually buying.
The membership calculation nobody can finish
PMI membership is marketed as the way to pay less. On the one product where both prices are visible, it is $139 to save $100 — so on PMI’s prep course alone, joining leaves you $39 down.
The case for membership therefore rests entirely on the exam-fee discount, which PMI does not publish. You cannot compare an unknown saving to a known $139. What you can do is note that membership is a subscription that renews annually, and that PMI’s renewal requirements run on a three-year cycle, so the decision repeats.
The fees that only appear when something goes wrong
PMI is far more forthcoming about penalties than about prices, and these are the numbers that turn a planned cost into an unplanned one.
- US$70 plus taxes to reschedule or cancel within 30 days of your appointment. Outside 30 days it is free. PMI’s own worked example: an exam on 5 May must be moved on or before 4 April to avoid the charge.
- Inside 48 hours, you cannot reschedule at all. Miss the appointment and you forfeit the entire exam fee and pay again.
- $100 administrative fee deducted from a refund if you fail the pre-scheduling identity verification.
- $45 USD for a hand rescore, which applies only to paper-based tests.
- Repayment of fees for the second and third attempts inside your one-year eligibility period.
None of that is unusual for a proctored professional exam. All of it is invisible on a page that quotes you one number and calls it the cost.
Training is the part of the bill you can see
The 35 hours are the one large component with published prices attached, and the only one you can change by choosing differently. The spread between routes is wide, and every figure below is what a provider’s own page showed us on 24 September 2026, in the currency it showed us, discounts and all.
| Route | Price we were shown | Term | What it leaves you holding |
|---|---|---|---|
| PMI PMP Exam Prep Course | USD $699 member / USD $799 full | One-off | 35 hours and 35 PDUs from the body that sets the exam |
| KnowledgeHut live training | €399, against a €1,199 list price | One-off | 36 live contact hours plus a 35-hour self-paced course |
| Simplilearn live training | €299, marked 30% off €429 | One-off | 35 contact hours, live and instructor-led |
| Coursera — Google certificate | $49 a month after a 7-day free trial | Subscription | Over 100 hours of PM education by Coursera’s count, aimed at the CAPM |
| Self-paced marketplace course | Not printed here | One-off | Promotional and regional; any figure would be stale within days |
| Employer or university training | Nothing extra | Already held | Hours you may already be able to record |
Two of those are subscriptions dressed as prices. Coursera’s Google certificate costs what your pace decides: three months is about $147, nine months about $441, and the page’s own estimate of “less than $300” assumes you move at roughly its suggested speed. Study Hall costs $59 now and $59 again in three months if you are still studying.
A budget that survives contact with the facts
Because the exam fee is unknowable from outside, budget in parts and leave the unknown labelled.
- Training: $0, or up to USD $799 for PMI’s own course. Zero if your employer already trained you, if a university module covers it, or if you hold an active CAPM, which waives the requirement.
- Practice material: $0 to $59 a quarter. Optional. PMI’s Study Hall is the only question bank whose alignment to the exam content outline comes from PMI.
- Membership: $139 a year, or nothing. Not required to sit the exam.
- Exam fee: unknown until your application is accepted. Regional, and different for members.
- Contingency: $70. One reschedule inside 30 days, which is the single most common avoidable cost on the list.
Read that list against the sequencing: you do not pay the exam fee until PMI has accepted your application, so you can discover your own number before you have committed to anything beyond training.
What this costs afterwards
The PMP is a three-year cycle, not a purchase. Keeping it needs 60 professional development units in each three-year renewal period, and PMI charges a renewal fee whose amount, like the exam fee, is subject to membership and regional pricing and is not published.
PDUs themselves can cost nothing. PMI counts hours spent learning, teaching, presenting, reading, volunteering and creating content, so a working project manager who writes up what they did and speaks at a chapter meeting accumulates them as a by-product. Budget the renewal fee as an unknown and the PDUs as time.
Where the cheapest honest route runs
If cost is the binding constraint, the order is: check whether your employer’s existing training or a past university module already gives you 35 recordable hours; if it does, you buy nothing but the exam. If it does not, and you have no experience leading projects yet, the CAPM route asks for less: 23 hours of education rather than 35, and holding it waives the PMP’s training requirement later. Its own exam fee is unpublished too, so the saving we can show you is in the training, not the total.
The most expensive route is the one taken twice: paying for training, failing to evidence it at audit, and buying it again. That is what the 35-hour page on this site is about — see what PMI accepts as PMP certification training before you choose on price alone.
