Free Project Management Certifications: What “Free” Really Buys
No recognised project management certification is free. PMI charges an exam fee for the PMP, the CAPM and the PMI-ACP, and Scrum Alliance’s CSM is built around a paid course. What is genuinely free is training — and for the PMP, training is 35 of the hours you would otherwise pay for.
That distinction is the whole of this page, because searches for “free project management certification” are almost always looking for one of two different things.
The word doing the work is “certification”
A certification attests that a body assessed you against a standard. That assessment costs the body money to run, so it charges. PMI does not publish its exam fees, but it charges them: its handbook says fees are subject to membership status and regional pricing, and its certification pages say the fee arrives once your application is accepted.
A certificate of completion records that you finished something. Many of those are free or nearly so, and some are excellent. They are not the same object, and a page describing a free certificate as a free certification is either careless or selling something.
There is a third word to keep separate. “Accredited” describes the issuing body, not the course. PMI says the PMP certification is accredited against ISO/ANSI 17024 and ISO 9001. A free course being “accredited” usually means something much looser or nothing at all.
Training that costs nothing and still counts
This is where the real value is, because PMI’s 35-hour requirement accepts more sources than most people use.
- Your employer’s own programme. PMI’s July 2026 exam content outline lists employer or company-sponsored programmes among the acceptable providers. If you sat through internal project management training, you may already hold recordable hours. Ask HR for a certificate or a letter — that is what an audit asks you to produce.
- A university or college course you already took. PMI accepts project-management courses from accredited higher-education institutions and counts one hour of classroom instruction as one training hour. Its own example: three hours a week for fifteen weeks is 45 training hours. Only the portion that was actually project management counts.
- Old training, at any age. PMI says to record training hours regardless of when they were accrued. There is no expiry, unlike the ten-year window on project experience.
- PMI’s free PMP introduction. PMI sells a “Free Introduction: Project Management Professional” at USD $0, about an hour long. It is an introduction rather than a qualification, but it costs nothing and it is the certifying body’s own material.
- An active CAPM. Not free to obtain, but if you already hold one, it waives the PMP’s 35-hour requirement completely.
Add those up before buying anything. A surprising number of applicants already hold most of the hours and pay for them a second time. What PMI will and will not accept is set out in full in what counts as PMP certification training.
What free training will not do
It will not cover the exam fee, which is unavoidable and unpublished. It will not substitute for experience: every PMP route needs between 24 and 60 months of leading projects, and no course changes that.
And free study material on its own does not qualify as training. PMI is explicit that books and practice exams alone will not be accepted as eligible commercial training. A free question bank is useful for preparation and worth nothing towards your 35 hours.
Free trials are not free courses
Coursera’s Google Project Management Certificate offers a seven-day free trial before $49 a month. Seven days is enough to decide whether you like the material; it is not enough to finish a series that Coursera itself describes as six months at ten hours a week.
Auditing a course — watching the material without submitting graded work — is free on many platforms and produces no certificate. Since a certificate is the only artefact an audit of your PMP application can use, auditing is a way to learn, not a way to qualify. Coursera also runs Financial Aid on many offerings for learners who apply and are approved, which is a genuine route to zero cost for some people and an application process rather than a button.
The full picture on that certificate, including whether its hours count, is in the Google certificate compared with the PMP.
The honest cheapest path
- Inventory what you hold. Employer training, university modules, old courses. Get the certificates now, while the people who can sign them still remember you.
- Fill the gap only. If you have 20 recordable hours, buy 15, not 35.
- Spend nothing on practice until you need it. PMI’s own Study Hall Essentials is USD $59 for three months and renews quarterly; free question banks are plentiful and none of them count towards your hours.
- Skip membership unless the maths works. PMI membership is USD $139 a year and saves $100 on PMI’s own course. On that product alone it does not pay for itself.
- Budget the exam fee as an unknown. It is the one line nobody outside PMI can price for you — see what PMP certification costs.
About the “free certification” offers you will find
Some training companies advertise free project management certifications. Read what is being certified. Usually it is completion of that company’s own short course, issued by that company, recognised by that company. That is not fraudulent and it is not worthless — it is simply not what an employer means when a job advert asks for a certification.
The test to apply is simple: who is the issuing body, and what did they assess? If the answer is “the company that sold me the course” and “that I watched the course”, you have a certificate of completion. It may still be worth having. It is not the PMP, and it will not be read as one.
