PMP Practice Exams: What They Can and Cannot Tell You

Published Aug 12, 2026Sources re-read Sep 24, 2026

A practice exam cannot tell you whether you will pass, because PMI does not publish a passing score to measure yourself against. What it can do is rehearse the format, the length and the pacing of an exam that runs 180 questions across 240 minutes with breaks you cannot walk back from. That is worth practising, and it is a smaller claim than the marketing makes.

What the real exam is made of now

Preparing against the wrong shape is the most common avoidable mistake, and the shape changed in 2026.

  • 180 questions, 240 minutes. Of those, 170 are scored and 10 are unscored pretest items placed at random, so ten of the questions you agonise over count for nothing.
  • Two ten-minute breaks, the first after the case-study section and the second about midway through the independent questions. Once you start a break you cannot return to the previous section.
  • Domain weights: People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26%, per the July 2026 exam content outline. The January 2021 outline weighted them 42%, 50% and 8% — so material built on the older outline under-prepares you for the business-environment questions by a wide margin.
  • Question types: multiple-choice single and multiple response, case or scenario sets and graphic-based questions (both new in 2026), plus enhanced matching, matching, point-and-click and pull-down lists. Those last four are only available on computer-based testing.

That last point has a practical edge. If you sit a paper-based exam, several of these formats cannot appear; if you sit online or at a test centre on a computer, they can. Practising drag-and-drop and hotspot questions on paper is not practising them.

What PMI sells, and what it costs

PMI’s own product is PMP PMI Study Hall Essentials at USD $59, read from its store on 24 September 2026. The page states three months of access, renewing quarterly thereafter, and describes short learning refreshers, questions, mini exams and full-length simulations aligned to the exam content outline.

That is the whole published price list for PMI practice material. Note the renewal: it is a subscription, so a study run that slips from three months to five costs $118 rather than $59. Budget it as quarterly, not as one-off.

PMI also sells a separate PMP Exam Prep Course of 35 hours at USD $699 for members and USD $799 otherwise. That is training, not practice — and the distinction matters for your application, because PMI states that books and practice exams alone will not be accepted as eligible commercial training. A question bank contributes nothing to your 35 hours. What does is covered in what counts as PMP certification training.

The readiness question nobody can answer

Practice platforms report a percentage and an encouraging or discouraging verdict. Treat the verdict as the platform’s opinion, because there is no published standard behind it.

PMI states that the passing score for all its exams is determined by sound psychometric analysis, and that its exams are criteria-based: they judge whether you met the criteria for a qualified person in the job role being tested. It publishes no percentage you must reach, and no pass rate for candidates overall.

So “I scored 78% on a mock” is not information about the PMP. It is information about that mock. What a practice exam can honestly tell you is where your recall is weak, whether you run out of time, and whether unfamiliar question formats slow you down — all real, all useful, none of it a prediction.

Why exam dumps are not a shortcut

A “dump” is a set of real questions recalled or leaked from a live exam. Using one is not a grey area.

Your application commits you to the PMI Certification Application/Renewal Agreement, which covers post-exam discussion of questions. PMI says such discussion is a potential violation that could affect the status of your certification, up to revocation or permanent suspension from any PMI exam. It uses independent third-party security vendors and forensic analysis, reviews exam sessions and results, and may invalidate scores or revoke a certification if it detects evidence of score invalidity.

There is also a quieter reason dumps are a bad study tool even for someone untroubled by the rules: the 2026 exam introduced case-study sets and graphic-based questions, which do not survive being written down as a list of stems and answers.

Getting the most out of practice

  1. Rehearse full length once. Four hours is the real difficulty. Do one complete simulation under timed conditions before exam day so the fatigue is not new.
  2. Practise in the delivery mode you booked. If you are sitting a computer-based exam, practise the interactive formats.
  3. Use the breaks deliberately. They are fixed points, and you cannot go back afterwards. Decide in advance how you will use them.
  4. Aim your revision by domain weight, at the current 33/41/26 split rather than an older one.
  5. Do not buy practice before you have your 35 hours settled. Practice is optional; the training hours are the requirement, and they are what an audit asks about.

If you are still working out the sequence, how long it takes to get PMP certified sets out the windows PMI imposes — including the one-year eligibility period inside which all three of your attempts must fit.

How we scored Study Hall

The rubric is published on the about page and totals ten: three points for doing the job it is sold for, two for a price published in full without a countdown, two for contents matching the claim, two for still being correct about PMI’s current rules, one for how long access lasts.

Study Hall Essentials scores 2.5, 2, 1.5, 2 and 0.5 — eight and a half. It loses half a point on its core job because no practice product can measure readiness against an unpublished standard, half a point on contents because “confidence” and “readiness” are claims no buyer can verify, and half a point on access because three months renews into a recurring charge.

Practice and preparation questions

What is a good score on a PMP practice exam?
There is no defensible answer, because PMI does not publish a passing score for the real exam. It says the standard is set by psychometric analysis against the criteria for a qualified project manager. A practice score tells you about that practice test; use it to find weak areas and timing problems, not to predict a result.
How many questions is the PMP exam?
180 questions in 240 minutes, of which 170 are scored and 10 are unscored pretest items distributed at random. There are two ten-minute breaks, the first after the case-study section and the second roughly midway through the independent questions, and you cannot return to a section once you have taken its break.
Do PMP practice exams count towards the 35 contact hours?
No. PMI states that books and practice exams alone will not be accepted as eligible commercial training. Practice material is preparation; the 35 hours must come from instruction, such as an Authorized Training Partner, an accredited higher-education course, an employer programme, or a self-paced course with an end-of-course assessment.
Are PMP exam dumps safe to use?
No. Your application binds you to PMI’s Certification Application/Renewal Agreement, and PMI says discussing exam questions could affect your certification up to revocation or permanent suspension from its exams. It also states that it uses third-party security vendors and forensic analysis and may invalidate scores where it detects evidence of invalidity.
